在一次接受采访时，库尔图瓦已经暗示了这一点，他说道：“我想念为国家队踢球的日子，因为我已经有一年半没有为国出战了。我已经准备好回归。”
库尔图瓦回归比利时国家队的关键显然是主教练的更换。由于和前比利时国家队主帅特德斯科之间关系不睦，库尔图瓦决定退出国家队，他甚至放弃了参加去年的欧洲杯。随着今年1月鲁迪-加西亚上任，库尔图瓦重返国家队变得越来越有可能，他的父亲以及国家队新帅都为他回归敞开了大门。
